Why should I bounce back like a squashed tomato?
What does a story of resilience look like when you’ve been deflated by a failure, or by the words of others or the tough circumstances that surround you?
TENNIS BALL
You might think RESILIENCE means ‘bouncing-back’ like a tennis ball - that when someone or something knocks us back we should try to bounce back as good as new.
I think you’ll agree that this isn’t always realistic?
SQUASHED TOMATO
A squashed tomato is a better analogy.
We all know what it means to feel crushed. When tomatoes are crushed their seeds are released, and can grow into new tomato plants.
This is the analogy of resilience I prefer.
Sometimes it just takes a few weeks or months (or longer) to see that a crushing experience leads to new growth and opportunity.
Looking back, can you think of a time when you felt ‘crushed’ but then grew in a new way as a result?
In my final email about confidence I’ll be sharing what Winnie the Pooh has to do with it!
Best wishes until then, Cat
