Do you recognise a voice like this?

“I should have got up earlier; I should have gone for a run; I should have eaten a healthier breakfast; I should have been more organised; I should have done that better; I’m late; I’m an idiot; I’ve failed; I’m useless; I should know better….”

Yes?

This is often how we speak to ourselves ALL. DAY. LONG.

So where does Winnie the Pooh come in?

I think of Winnie the Pooh as everyone’s loyal best friend – and that is EXACTLY what we need to be to OURSELVES.

I hope you would never speak in the way I’ve written above to a close friend of yours, and if you did I don’t think they would stay your friend for long.

So why do we speak to ourselves in this way and what impact does it have?

Feeling confident is directly linked to how we speak to ourselves.  Imagine having your own Winnie the Pooh, the best friend and coach you can imagine in your ‘corner’ - they believe in you, they support you, they encourage you, they never let you give up.

Every single word we say to ourselves is taken as a fact by our mind.  Just as a thought can cause us to blush, feel butterflies in our stomachs or cause our mouth to water, every word we say has an outcome, so choose the words you say to yourself carefully.

“The reputation you have with yourself is the single most important factor for a fulfilling life”

Nathaniel Brandon

I challenge you to try saying these phrases to yourself this week, and for the rest of your life, put them on your mirror, on your phone as reminders, stick them around your house, make them your passwords.

I can’t cope                                                        I have incredible coping strategies
I can’t do this                                                     I can do this
This is a nightmare          becomes                 This is a challenge
I’m useless                                                         I always do my best
I’m an idiot                                                         I have everything I need within me
I’m a failure                                                        I am always learning and growing

Change your words – Change your life.

I hope you have enjoyed this series of emails.
