The 'Baseball Bat' Technique
Many people come to me with what are called ‘looping thoughts’ – perhaps something like
Thought
“I’m not very good at speaking to new people”
Feeling
“I get anxious when I have to introduce myself or enter a room of strangers”
Behaviour
“I’ll avoid going to events or occasions….”
Which loops back to the thought
“Because I’m not very good at speaking to new people”
You can see that the thought, feeling and behaviour loops back to the original thought and so goes round and round never-endingly.
Can you think of an example for yourself?
A huge part of my work is discovering the root cause of these thoughts and beliefs that people carry, because we are not born with them, they are put there or come from somewhere, and therefore, we have the power to understand where they came from and give them back.

When you have identified a common looping thought you can recognise it, and respond with a great big bat. Literally bat it away and say “you don’t help me, you’re not true, I’m not listening to you any more” because these thoughts are not true, they’re just thoughts, they don’t get to rule us unless we let them in.
I had a young woman once whose belief that she wasn’t attractive enough was causing her to avoid going out with her friends and she was missing out on so many opportunities. She decided enough was enough and every time the “I’m not attractive” thought came into her head she swung her great big bat and said go away!
Do you know the difference between ordinary people and successful people?
It’s not a lack of fear, or a lack of these unhelpful thoughts – it’s the fact that they feel the fear, and hear the thoughts, but do it anyway, they take a bat and refuse to let fear get in their way.
