Drops of Gratitude
I’m sure you’ve heard about the power of gratitude as a reframing tool for turning our focus away from what we can’t control or what we don’t have, and towards what we can control and what we can be glad about.
I call the way I do this drops of gratitude.
Choose something in your day that you do every day or several times a week, for example, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, washing up dishes or hanging up the washing.
Each time you do that activity try also getting into the habit of listing the small things you have been grateful for that day.
I say small things, because if we go for larger things we’ll usually always be saying the same things, perhaps health, family, a warm home etc.
Obviously these are huge and important things to feel grateful for, but there is often even more power in noticing the tiny moments of gratitude and giving them our focus and attention – the ray of sunshine, a favourite song on the radio, a conversation with someone we care about.
My favourite drops of gratitude from today have been (aim for at least 5!):
- my cat jumping on my knee while I was working and making me smile
- my morning coffee
- going for a short run with my eleven year old daughter, especially because she suggested it!
- walking across the bridge in my village and watching the river flow by for a few moments
- being out in the fresh air
- taking on a new client
- arranging to meet a friend for a coffee
What activity can you use to remind you to recall and appreciate drops of gratitude every day? Choosing the most mundane activity, that you don’t really enjoy, is often the best one to choose, because if we can use it to remind ourselves to be grateful we have taken control of what it means to us and can choose to value and enjoy it!
Let me know how you get on.
In the next email I’ll be sharing how to use a baseball bat to get back on track!
Best wishes, Cat
